The Secret to Fulfillment (It’s Simpler Than You Think)
Have you ever experienced achieving your goals but not felt fulfilled?
I certainly have. I loved my career in Human Resources, until I didn’t. I checked all the boxes, got all the certifications, and yet I still felt like something was missing.
What could it possibly be I asked myself? I have a great job, great co-workers, and great pay. But when I thought about my life’s trajectory all I could think was… this can’t possibly be all there is.
That moment was the beginning of something I didn’t have a name for at the time—but now I do.
It’s fulfillment.
What is Fulfillment, Anyway?
Some dictionaries refer to fulfillment as “the achievement of something desired, promised, or predicted.” But they have it all wrong.
Fulfillment is actually not about achievement. Fulfillment is so much more. Fulfillment is the feeling of contentment and satisfaction that comes from living in alignment with your values, passions, and purpose, resulting in a deep sense of meaning and joy. Fulfillment is a journey.

Why Do We Struggle To Be Fulfilled?
To be honest, there are so many reasons why a person could feel unfulfilled. To simplify, it is when you are not living in alignment with what you want.
There is so much noise. As a culture, we are so obsessed with hustle. And honestly, we are never really asked to reflect on what we truly want. Seriously, when was the last time someone asked you:
What do you truly want out of life?
Not, what career do you want. Not, do you want to get married and have kids. But a true holistic ask of what you want out of life.
And perhaps, maybe you are some of the lucky few that someone asked you (or maybe even you asked yourself!) That is awesome.
But how often do we actually take actions on those thoughts? Because either we or someone else shuts down the dreams - either because it’s not “realistic” or it’s risky. Or any other myriad of reasons.
It happens all the time. And it breaks my heart.
So we move along with life and choose the “safe” route. The “good enough” route. Because maybe we should just be grateful, right?
But here’s the truth: You can be grateful and still go after more of what you want.
You are allowed to live the life you want. You are allowed to chase your dreams.
The Secret to Fulfillment
Now, you may be wondering, how do I do it? How do I live a fulfilling life?
I first want to say - I said it was simple, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. It takes a lot of dedication to truly reflect on what you want in life and then go after it.
There is no quick “fix” to fulfillment. It takes work and getting truly honest with yourself.
If you’re ready to start taking steps towards fulfillment, it all starts with reflection. Reflection is the key to clarity. If you don’t spend time on reflection, all of the goals, steps, and actions you make may not necessarily be aligned with what you want to live a fulfilled life.
Reflection can take many forms, and I always recommend you choose the options that feel aligned for you, not what you think you “should” do. Some options include journaling, walking, or meditating. The key is to create space for yourself and be intentional.
A favorite exercise I often use with coaching clients is writing a Future Self Letter—a powerful journaling practice that brings surprising clarity and insight.
How to Write a Letter From Your Future Self
Find a quiet space and imagine yourself a year from now—living fully fulfilled and aligned.
Write as if you’ve already are fulfilled. Share how you feel, what you’ve learned, and the choices that helped you grow.
Don’t worry about perfect words—write honestly and openly.
